Wimal had acted against the UN Secretary General following a request by the President
A senior member of the Patriotic National Movement (PNM) said that NFF Leader and PNM senior member, Minister Wimal Weerawansa had summoned a press briefing on June 30th and criticized the UN Secretary General following a personal request made by the President.
Wimal told the media that until the UN Secretary general withdrew the panel of experts appointed on Sri Lanka, people in Sri Lanka should surround the UN office in Colombo and hold its staff hostage. However, following the massive international criticism gathered by the comment, the government was compelled to say that it
was not the official stance of the Sri Lankan government.
Although the government made such a comment on the statement made by Wimal, the PNM member said that the President had requested the organization and Wimal to attack the UN and the Secretary General and to carry out an island wide campaign against the Secretary General’s actions.
